Panthers Bring Home First Sectional Title

The Sectional 52 championship game between the Lakewood Park Panthers and the Blackhawk Braves was one for the history books. The Panthers came out firing in the first quarter starting with a 23-12 lead keyed by 3 triples from Carter Gonzalez and 2 triples from Trevor Day, but the Braves would end the quarter on a 7-2 run to make the score 25-19 after the first. The second quarter consisted of both teams trading baskets until the last 15 seconds. At that point the Panthers closed the half with a 3 from Trevor Day and a half-court buzzer beater by Keegan Fetters to give the Panthers a 41-38 lead at the half. Blackhawk won the third quarter and had a 4 point lead going into the fourth quarter. Both teams were neck and neck in the fourth quarter with the game coming right down to the wire at the end. With 25 seconds left, Blackhawk made a lay-up to tie the game. Trusting his team and his senior leader Fetters, Head Coach Rod Wilmont chose to not call time and to hold the ball for the last shot. Fetters held the ball until the 10 second mark, attacked, and finished over the defense with 3.2 seconds left to give Lakewood the 2 point lead. Blackhawk threw up a prayer at the end, but that shot that fell short, and the Panthers escaped with their first Boys Basketball Sectional Championship in school history.

Scoring: Lozano 6, Gonzalez 15, Day 12, Fetters 31, Traylor 3, Miller 2, Schlotterback 8
